
From Diagnostic Result to First Practice Block
Treat a short diagnostic as a hypothesis: choose one indicated skill, practise a small matched set and update the conclusion from stronger evidence.

A five-question diagnostic is useful for direction but too small to label mastery. Its purpose is to reduce uncertainty about where to investigate next, not to produce a grade or permanent learner category.
Take it one step at a time.
01Read the route and sample
Confirm which specification and skills were sampled and which parts of the course were not tested.
02Choose one hypothesis
Select the clearest indicated gap or uncertainty, considering prerequisites and the learner’s own confidence.
03Run a matched practice block
Use enough new questions to distinguish an isolated slip from a repeated pattern.
04Update, do not defend
If the new evidence contradicts the diagnostic, change the plan. The diagnostic served its purpose by prompting investigation.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Calling a short diagnostic a predicted grade.
- Starting a complete course plan from five questions.
- Ignoring strong learner evidence that contradicts the sample.
Use the method on your exact course
Confirm the qualification, subject, awarding body, specification generation and any tier, level, option or component with your school before applying the method.
Start with a small question you can check independently. Keep the first attempt, learn from feedback, then return to fresh material after a delay.
What useful evidence looks like
The first practice block should improve confidence in the diagnosis by adding independent questions on the same mapped skill.
Read results alongside coverage, sample size, difficulty and recency. One answer does not establish the whole topic.
For parents: support the next action
Describe the result as “where to look next,” not “what the learner is.”
